January Volunteer Spotlight

By Associate Member Jessica Harlow
January 23, 2018

Each month we will be sitting down with one of our members and asking them a few questions to feature them in our “Volunteer Spotlight.” We hope you enjoy getting to know each of our members and seeing what being a member of OVFC is all about.

This month we sat down with Firefighter Will Brockman to ask him a few questions about being a volunteer firefighter with OVFC.

Will lives in Orange with his girlfriend, Kirsten, her two children, Katelyn and Tyler, and their dogs, Sammy, Luke, and Leah. Will joined OVFC in the summer of 2005, after his freshman year of college. He currently works at Dominion Energy North Anna Power Station as a Radiation Protection Shift Supervisor. Some of his hobbies include hunting, mostly waterfowl, but also deer and turkey, cooking, and music, including playing the piano, guitar and mandolin. Will also currently serves as the department secretary.

1. Why did you join OVFC?

“To serve my community and neighbors in times of dire need. I also had several friends who were members and encouraged me to join.”

2. What is the most rewarding part of volunteering?

“Being there to help someone on their worst day, and the brotherhood and comradery built among the members of OVFC.”

3. What is something you’d like the community to know about OVFC?

“We are all ordinary people with regular jobs that sacrifice our own time to provide the citizens of Orange County with top notch fire service. And that we are always looking for new members.”

4. If you had the choice to ride the Engine or Truck, what's your pick?

“I like aspect of both but if given the choice I'd want to be on the tip of the attack line off the engine.”

5. While a lot of the time the primary focus is on the firefighters who are running the calls, their families and the sacrifices they make are often over looked. We took a minute to sit down with Will’s girlfriend, Kirsten and asked her; What is it like to have a significant other as a volunteer fire fighter?

“Scary at times - you know what they are doing is wonderful and takes a truly selfless person to put their safety on the line to help others... unfortunately being the one at home waiting for them to return and also knowing the hazards and risks is hard to handle sometimes. You have to have faith and trust that everything and everyone will turn out just fine.”
