ALWAYS DIAL 911 FOR EMERGENCIES

19546 MONROVIA ROAD

May 1 - OVFC units as well as surrounding companies were dispatched at 1626 hrs to a house on fire at the above address in Co. 23's first due.  Chief 23 responded from the station and was advised of a possible working fire and that all occupants were advised to evacuate.  Wagon and Tanker 23 left shortly after the Chief.  While responding, Emergency Communications advised units that another caller stated that the second floor was on fire.  Chief 23 arrived shortly after that report and said he was out with a story-and-a-half single family with heavy fire on side 4.  Wagon 23 pulled into the driveway and pulled the 200' pre-connect from the passenger side and advanced it to the rear of the structure.  Due to high winds and heavy fire conditions, the crew made a quick attack from the outside then advanced the line into the side 2 kitchen door.  Heavy smoke conditions were quickly eased with horizontal ventilation and the fire presented itself in the stairwell which was accessed from the front (side 1) of the house.  While the Wagon's crew took up position at the bottom of the stairs, the Tanker's crew advanced the other pre-connect from Wagon 23 to the front door and meet the Wagon's crew inside.  The Wagon's crew advanced into the stairwell and found heavy fire on 1/2 of the second floor.  After an aggressive knockdown, high winds fanned the fire which had vented itself vertically and caused the crews to retreat into the stairwell.  After regrouping, the first crew began advancing the line up with the protection of the second line operating behind them.  That line was battling heavy fire conditions behind a kneewall on the side 1/4 corner which was generating heavy heat and had just blown fire across the stairwell over the backs of the first line's crew which was still advancing to the top of the stairs.  This action darkened down the fire and pushed everything else out into the open where the first line was able to extinguish the bulk of what was left.  After the extinguishment, extensive salvage and overhaul operations began which took almost 2 hours.

Note:  Although some the second floor received heavy fire damage, the first floor remained in good condition with the exception of some smoke and minimal water damage..

Command: C23 (B. Roby) then passed to C23-1 (L.O. Clements)

Units responding/operating: C23, W23, K23, T23, SU23, W24, E10 (Culpeper Co.), SU21, K21, K6 (Louisa Co.), OCEMS, and OCRS.
